המערה נחשפה במקרה כשבמהלך עבודות פיתוח בשכונה חדשה בצפון העיר, פגע טרקטור בפתח המערה וחשף אותה, הקבלן הזמין את העירייה ורשות העתיקות ופקח נדהם לראות את התגלית המרשימה.

המערה החצובה מורכבת ממבואה שעוטרה בטיח צבעוני, חדר מרכזי שבו כוכי קבורה וגלוסקמאות חרס ואבן מעוטרות עם חדר פנימי נוסף. בכניסה לכל חדר הותקנו דלתות אבן מעוטרות, המפרידות בין החדרים.

באחד מחדרי המערה נמצאו כתובות המציינות את שמות הנקברים במערה.

יצוין כי בתקופה הרומית המתוארכת לתקופת בניית המערה חיו בסביבת העיר כמה כפרים שהיו מעין שכונות של העיר טבריה בהם הכפר בית מעון בו התגורר ופעל ריש לקיש, והכפרים כופרא, באר מזיגא ועוד.
